DAVIS, CA - On a beautiful summer night, FC Davis (3-2-5) and Sonoma Sol (3-4-3) took the field

Davis had the opportunity to push their cushion to 5 points clear in the playoff standings after El Farolito easily handled Napa Valley 6-0 earlier in the day.

Sonoma Sol had the rest of the conference hoping for the visitors to score an upset. A loss would put only one team within realistic striking distance of Davis with four games left to play. A win for the Sol would bring up to 4 teams back into the mix.

The majority of the Golden Gate Conference got their wish as Sonoma Sol ended the Golden Lions 8 game unbeaten streak.

Within the first five minutes of the match, FC Davis fell behind when Edgar Amador had a heavily deflected cross find the back of the net.

After the initial goal, Sonoma Sol played a stout defensive game, sitting back in their half of the field while looking for counter attack opportunities.

Even though FC Davis had the majority of possession, the home side was unable to muster any efforts towards net.

Davis was later frustrated when the Sol scored right before the half. Unable to clear the initial corner, the Davis defense had to watch as Maury Lopez fired a shot into the back of the net putting the Golden Lions down 0-2 going into the locker room.

“By far our worst performance of the year,” said FC Davis captain Brian Ford. “We simply have to play better.”

Despite a line-up haul by the home side at halftime, Davis was unable to threaten the Sonoma goal as they visitors were content sitting in their half of the field, denying any clear opportunities.

The game finished 0-2 snapping an 8 game unbeaten streak for FC Davis.

The loss puts the Golden Lions two points ahead of East Bay Stompers and the Sonoma Sol for the final playoff spot in the National Playoffs.
