On Saturday night, FC Davis continued their flying start to 2019 when Golden Gate Conference foe East Bay Stompers visited town.
After scoring 7 goals in two games, the Golden Lions looked to build upon their early season success and continue their dominant offensive performances.
From the opening whistle, the home side took control of the match. Chances for FC Davis came in bunches as co-leading scorers Miguel Acevedo and Evan Barrett just missed out finding the back of the net in the opening 10 minutes.
After a couple more chances went astray, East Bay sat deeper in their half of the field making it difficult for the FC Davis attacking trio of Acevedo, Barrett, and Chongo to break down the away sides back-line.
“East Bay defended well and made going forward difficult for us,” said FC Davis head coach Mark Torguson. “ Still, we felt it was just a matter of time before we put one in. It was the way the game was going.”
At the ‘30 mark, the Golden Lions finally broke through when Kennedy Chongo turned into a one-man counter-attack, running past 5 East Bay Defenders and slotted the ball home past East Bay keeper Dominik Jakubek.
The goal put FC Davis ahead going into half-time, but the home team knew it could, and probably should have been up more.
The second half whistle blew and it was more of the same for the Golden Lions.
The chances came early as Andiseh Bagheri just missed the frame with a free kick. Shortly after, Lucas Mohageg’s header narrowly missed the goal off a corner.
After a breakaway save from FC Davis keeper Jon Laughlin to preserve the 1-0 lead, Davisville Management Co. Man of the Match Onah Power put the game away with a goal in the 80th minute of play.
“Happy with the result tonight”, said head coach Mark Torguson. “We kept our first clean sheet of the season and continued to create chances. We know over the course of the season if we continue to put the ball in the net, games will go our way. Our back-line and goalkeeping have been fantastic and when we combine the two performances like we did tonight, we are going to be tough to beat.”
FC Davis would like to thank the Davis Legacy 2009 and 2010 girls for participating in our pre-match walk out!
FC Davis has a bye week followed by an Easter Weekend break. The Golden Lions next game is Saturday night, April 27th when reining Golden Gate Conference Champion El Farolito from San Francisco visit Davis.
