The rain stopped and the sunshine came out two hours before kickoff on Saturday night as Davis battled Dixon to begin the 2024 UPSL season.
The inclement weather did not deter fans, who lined Playfields to watch the two sides compete during their first competitive match.
Davis wasted no time making their mark on the game when Nico Smith lit up the scoreboard after slotting home a soaring cross from Serigo Marquez, propelling Davis into an early 1-0 lead.
Despite Davis's early dominance, Dixon's resilient defense and vigilant goalkeeping thwarted several attempts by the home side to extend their lead, ensuring the scoreline remained 1-0 at halftime.
As the match progressed into the second half, Davis clung onto their slender advantage, with Dixon's midfield Allan Espinoza and Ryan Hubert gradually asserting their influence, dictating play and creating opportunities for the visitors.
Reflecting on the performance, FC Davis coach Niall Masterson remarked, "I don't think we moved the ball as efficiently as we could have tonight. However, we capitalized on crucial moments and demonstrated clinical finishing when presented with chances."
Indeed, Masterson's observation proved astute, as substitute Tony Melendez's pinpoint delivery into the box found the onrushing Leo Hoppe, who coolly doubled Davis's lead to 2-0.
With Dixon reduced to ten men following a red card, the two-goal deficit proved insurmountable, allowing the Lion's to coast to a triumphant opening night victory.
"Dixon posed a formidable challenge, but our defensive unit and spectacular goal keeping earned us a well-deserved clean sheet," Masterson praised.
"Securing two fantastic goals and maintaining a clean sheet made for a memorable home opener," Masterson added. "We're immensely grateful for the support of our home fans and anticipate the journey ahead this season."
The Lions' next home fixture is on Saturday, April 13th at 7:00pm as they prepare for rivals Sonoma County Sol visit to Playfields.
