The FC Davis Golden Lionesses picked up a hard-fought 2-2 tie against conference leaders Fresno Freeze in a game that almost saw the Lionesses come away with the three points Saturday night at Nugget Soccer Fields.
Goals from Miranda Diaz and Baylie Jackson twice gave FC Davis the lead only for Fresno to equalize.
Both sides opened the match cautiously, with few chances created in the first 20 minutes. However, FC Davis found a chink in Fresno’s armor in the 22nd minute when Baylie Jackson completed off a sweeping move with a composed finish into the bottom corner.
The home side appeared to be cruising, creating numerous opportunities including a strike off the crossbar, however, an incredible solo goal from the Fresno striker only a minute before halftime saw the teams head into the interval even at one goal apiece.
Into the second period, the Golden Lionesses continued to threaten, hitting the woodwork once more before Miranda Diaz unleashed a 25-yard screamer into the top corner to reclaim the Davis advantage in the 57th minute.
Despite solid play from the home side, Fresno Freeze evened the score once again in the 68th minute. The Lionesses sought a dramatic winner, but in the end, had to settle for the draw and a single point.
The Golden Lionesses will aim to take down rivals California Storm Saturday, June 14, at Davis Legacy Sports Complex.
