Lion's Limp Into Season Opener

FC Davis kicks-off their 2020 season tonight when the Lion’s visit arch rival Sacramento Gold.

The first installment of the Causeway Clasico will be a test for the Lions, who will be without a host of stars including Evan Barrett, Miguel Acevedo and Justin Wright.

FC Davis midfield wizard Andisheh Bagheri could be out for an extended period of time with a knee injury, while high profile incoming goal scorer Kristian Heptner could also miss multiple games with a foot injury.

In total, nine regulars will miss tonight and three extra games to start the season.

“We ran into some bad luck entering the season, no question about it,” said FC Davis head coach Mark Torguson. “This is part of the process and while we are missing key players, the team is confident we can weather the injury bug and get results.”

Noah Wilson will be counted upon to lead the team in the middle of the field while Kennedy Chongo will lead the front line for Davis.

The back-line will be lead by Jorge Negrete with a trio of new Lion’s hitting the pitch to round out the back four.

If there is a bright spot on the night, the depth of the roster will be challenged early in the season. This could prove valuable, as injuries were a cause for concern late in the Lion’s 2019 Golden Gate title run.

With Round One of the US Open Cup taking place March 25th in San Francisco, the Davis hoped to get a consistent run of games with their projected starting line-up. While the Lion’s will have to wait until potentially April to hit full stride, the squad will look to keep the ship steady.

Davis vs Sacramento will take place at 7:00 PM at Capital Christian High School.
